Homeopathy vs. Allopathy: Which is better?

Intro:

Homeopathy and Allopathy have always been at the two opposite ends of the equilibrium. People on either sides keep waging wars against each other. But the thing that everyone needs to understand is that both the forms of treatment have the same end goal: treating people.

The terms for both these medical fields were coined by Samuel Hahnemann. Let’s study them both in depth.

What is allopathy?

Allopathy works on the theory that if someone is suffering from some particular disease, then a remedy is to be administered depending on the disease and the symptoms present. Allopathy is made to suppress the symptoms quickly and give relief. Allopathy is very fast-acting and provides immediate relief in case of major accidents. These medicines are made from chemicals in big pharmaceutical companies and are mostly man-made. Using them in emergency situations is what saves many lives. However, since they are made up of chemicals, each drug has numerous side-effects and shouldn’t be used in extreme.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is based on a theory of “like cures like”. Using ingredients that induce the same symptoms caused in the diseases. For example, Belladonna is very deadly and causes hallucination and seizures in a healthy person. But homeopathic medicine of 30C potency created with Belladonna is used to cure fever, inflammation and pain. Usually the lesser is the amount of the ingredient, its efficiency will also reduce. But according to homeopathy, the efficiency actually increases as the quantity decreases. Since the quantity of the original ingredient is so little, there are basically no side-effects of taking homeopathic medicines. They are so safe that they can be used by infants and pregnant women as well without any prohibitions.

Why the war?

Considering all the laws of physics, it is a little hard to digest the fact that reducing an ingredient would increase its effectiveness. Hence, the people against homeopathy keep lobbying that it is no more than placebo effect. Despite numerous experiments and case studies, people are just not ready to believe that homeopathy might be something genuine and not just placebo.

It is important to understand that homeopathy doesn’t fight the symptoms but actually works to strengthen the immune system of the human body. This enables us to fight back diseases on our own and makes us stronger against the particular disease for a long time to come.

To be fair, there are also some self-proclaimed homeopaths who advise the patients against important medical procedures. They are totally against vaccination and surgery even when it’s evidently crucial. Not vaccinating could lead to epidemics of diseases that have been under control for decades and not going for surgery might lead to the death of someone who could’ve been saved. These aren’t good or genuine homeopaths and they put other genuine homeopaths under the negative light.

What’s the solution?

Till date, there has been no definite solution for this tug of war. Yet, both the medical fields are co-existing, albeit with some sourness involved. Each field is different and follows a different methodology, with allopathy taking the primary place around the world. There are recorded statistics that show the effectiveness of homeopathy and there are numerous cases where allopathy has saved lives. Both are beneficial to mankind since they save lives and treat people all around the world. A just and positive outlook towards both the field will help us improving healthcare.

To conclude, patient trust and compliance are very important in any field of medicine. The benefits of both the fields are uncountable when the treatment is deployed with the proper method and correct dosage. Homeopathy and allopathy both continue to impact the world by contributing in their distinct ways.
