Homeopathy vs. Ayurveda: Is there a difference?

The modern world may be heading fast toward the advanced western medicine system but it cannot replace the herbal and natural healthcare systems. People worldwide continue to use them because of their proven benefits and lack of harmful side-effects.

Two of the major alternative forms of medicines are homeopathy and Ayurveda. Despite being in the same category, both of them have vast differences. Let us take a closer look at them.

Homeopathy’s Definition and Principles

German physician Samuel Hahnemann discovered and developed Homeopathy. His theory is based on the principle of like cures like. According to the principle, a substance that causes a certain set of symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat the same set of symptoms in people who are ill.

The word homeopathy itself is a definition. Homeo originates from a Greek word, which means similar or like and pathy also has its origin in Greek, which means disease. In Homeopathy, every individual is unique and hence, the remedies are also different for each patient. Homeopathy believes in treating the patient and curing the disease, rather than focusing on the symptoms separately.

Ayurveda’s Definition and Principles

Ayurveda focuses on the balance between the mental and physical state of a person. It is one of the oldest holistic healing systems. The word has origin in the Sanskrit language. The word Ayur means life and the term Veda means knowledge.

As per the Ayurvedic principles, everyone has a Prakruti which means character. The character is decided by three bodily energies that are known as doshas. These doshas are respectively called Pitta, Vata, and Kapha.
